⁉️ What is Sapling?

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Background

Sapling aimed to enhance school security nationwide by deploying state-of-the-art security systems manufactured by I2D, an industrial design studio. To facilitate the installation process, a customized app was developed to assist Sapling's technicians in deploying these crucial safety measures efficiently.

PRODUCT & UI/UX DESIGNER

My role

As the lead product designer, I was responsible for designing a streamlined mobile app for Sapling's technicians. My role encompassed the entire design process, from research to implementation to testing.

THE BEGINNING

Problem

Sapling's technicians faced significant challenges during installations, including fragmented communication channels, limited access to vital data, and inefficient workflow procedures. These hurdles resulted in delays and operational inefficiencies.

THE BEGINNING

Solution

Through comprehensive user research and innovative strategies, we developed a specialized mobile application tailored to Sapling's requirements. This solution revolutionized how technicians interacted with the installation process, addressing their challenges effectively.

💞 EMPATHIZE

20 Sapling’s technicians were asked questions...

  1. Can you walk me through your typical workflow when installing systems in schools?

  2. What tools or resources do you currently use to assist you during installations?

  3. How do you communicate with team members and coordinate tasks during installations?

  4. How do you track progress and ensure quality control throughout the installation process?

  5. What are the biggest challenges you face during the installation process of Sapling's security systems?

💞 EMPATHIZE

User persona

I created a user persona based on the research findings and a short secondary research. I found out that people have frustrations about reliability and lack of awareness, especially from people who are related to finance.

🎯 DEFINE

Problem statement

Vlad, a Sapling technician, needs a streamlined solution to tackle communication barriers, access timely resources and maintain quality standards during school security system installations.

💡 IDEATE

Digital wireframes

This low-fidelity prototype represents the main user flow around the app. I made sure to stick to the user pain points and needs while designing this flow. Digital wireframes help a designer make right decisions about the final product with a usability study, which is the next chapter of the project.

🧪 TEST

Usability study overview

While I conducted the initial usability tasks and KPIs for the project, the collaboration extended beyond my role as another designer took the lead in completing the usability study. This joint effort ensured a comprehensive evaluation of the app's usability, allowing for valuable insights to inform further design iterations and enhancements.

Participants:
🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️
24-45 years old

Methodologies:

  1. Unmoderated usability study.

  2. Users were asked to perform tasks on a high-fidelity prototype.

  3. 10-15 minutes per participants, in USA, remote.

🧪 TEST

Study details

Tasks:

  1. Understand the latest installation guidelines for a pendant device.

  2. Add a new device to your current project and find its status.

  3. Troubleshoot a reported issue with a security device and apply the appropriate solution.
‍

  4. Find the project manager and leave a comment for him.

KPIs:

  1. Task success rate - Percentage of participants who successfully complete each usability task.

  2. Error rate - Number of errors encountered by participants while attempting to complete usability tasks.

  3. System Usability Scale (SUS) - Overall usability rating provided by participants after completing usability tasks.
